Digitally Fractured Beliefs

DIGITALLY FRACTURED BELIEFS

Only belief unites people, for going to war or for civic projects.  It is only belief, ungrounded - arbitrary - unsubstantiated shared belief.

Belief, and only belief, gets an army to march, the members to pledge, a populace to serve.

Belief driven societies underlie all of human history.

Shattering of shared belief underlies today’s fractured political landscape.

In hindsight the unravelling of nations and civilization by the internet was quite predictable because the internet and fractured media facilitated the shattering of shared belief.

The collapse of a unified belief system, neighbors holding different beliefs, family members holding conflicting faiths, this is exponentially amplified by today’s diverse digital media environment.

I no longer need to behave like you.  Unseen influencers in Moscow or Austin can shape my behavior, and your behavior.  Even your family need not worship as you do.  A media multitude will tell them they need not worship at all.

The great clashes of civilizations are simply clashes of beliefs, beliefs that conveniently justified the raping and pillaging that reside in our dark souls.  The belief could be in a king or prophet or political system, as long as it was a shared belief.  .

For millennia, family and society defined our beliefs.  Now we can believe whatever we want, with affirmation from people all over the world.  It is a heady feeling, a disorienting feeling, inducing a spiritual vertigo.  It is liberating, one would think.  Yet instead, it is more fearful than liberating, because we are exposed to so many people, people near and far, who do not share our beliefs and even threaten our beliefs.

This is new for humanity.  Our beliefs are ultimately our identity.  Contradictory beliefs in such close proximity are a threat to the core essence of our being.

Historically humanity accommodates a sudden exposure to conflicting beliefs by invoking violence, cataclysm, and terror on the infidels, heathens, and gentiles.  But this time the differing beliefs are not across a border, not conveniently wearing a uniform, not even demonstrating the courtesy of self-identifying with a different skin color or facial structure.

This is existential conflict of beliefs, beliefs identified only by channels watched and newsfeeds subscribed.

Differing beliefs can coexist if there is some shared overarching belief subsuming the divergent beliefs, or if the differing belief is entertained by such a small cross section of population as to not pose a threat.  On Sunday mornings it was OK to drive past those other churches that were not really that different from ours.  It was OK to tolerate some minority opinions and ethnic groups when all were under an umbrella of shared patriotism and faith in a political system.  But remove the umbrella of overarching belief, partition a subcontinent or dissolve an authoritarian Balkan country, and the next lower level of beliefs  come to the fore, beliefs now in conflict.  The people that have always been in that other house of worship now seem threatening.

In the United States and western Europe, the overarching blanket of beliefs is being stripped away, not by imposition of new borders or eradication of central governments, but by profitable exploitation of fears and ignorance.  Nothing has changed, but you and I now believe completely contradictory claims.

Shatter beliefs and shatter a nation, fragment beliefs and destroy a civilization.

When my neighbor shares almost none of my beliefs, it takes little provocation,  a provocation based on fervently held belief, for my neighbor to become a threat.

That is the world (dis)order of the internet, repeating the lessons of history but now worldwide, a history driven in its triumphs and tragedies by beliefs, beliefs now dispersed and mixed and scattered and stirred, terrifying diversity right next door,  even in our own living room, history waiting, waiting, to see if humanity will find any belief in common, anything overarching, some belief to share and unite, before the digital media incited conflicting beliefs turn our own neighborhood into the 1861 U.S., 1919 Russia, 1935 China, 1947 India, 1965 Indonesia, 1992 Balkans, 2024 Ukraine, 2025 Palestine…….

God Has Left the Building

GOD HAS LEFT THE BUILDING

Holiness?

Do we not believe it exists?

Do we believe "holiness" to be a vestigial mental concept of no relevance to our carnal lives?

Is "holiness" relegated to an altar or reliquary or ritual?

Does that mean God has deserted us?  If we sense no "holiness" through the course of a day, what's that say about God, or the world, or us?

God has left the building?

The world supposedly of God's Creation is now corrupt and bereft of any residual holiness?

Or we just don't see that holiness, don't sense it, or maybe we're blinded to it by our goal-oriented busyness.

"Holiness"....seriously?....relegated to something constructed by human hands?....or constrained to some ritual or liturgy?.....or relegated to the past?

Imagine what life would be like if we were more adept at discerning holiness.  Imagine what the world would be like if more people were willing to accept the possibility of holiness.

"Holiness".....in the routine, in the grasp of a baby, in the blossom of a flower, in an exercise of patience.

"Holiness", not an alien and inscrutable weirdness stuck in pages of scripture, not divorced from our morning chores, but an integral component of each, the foundation underlying all.  Doesn't that seem more reasonable for a world created by a God worthy of any worship?

Look for it, be open to it, just in case, just in case it is there after all, awaiting a respite from our denials.

Beware God's Will

BEWARE GOD’S WILL

All these people, sincerely believing they are doing God’s will.  All these people, inflicting suffering for God...and yes, there are two interpretations of that last sentence.

Invoke God’s will and watch the conflict begin.

Invoke God’s will and listen to the rising anger.

Invoke God’s will,  I defy you to do it passively, unless making excuses for some cataclysm, tragedy, suffering, or God-forsaken wretch.

Invoke God’s will, and condemn.

Invoke God’s will, and turn away.

Invoke Gods will, and pull the trigger.

Or admit you have no idea how to extricate God’s will from your opinions, wants, wishes, and jealously fortified beliefs.  Admit, confess even if only secretly to yourself, then go forth and do something caring and compassionate. Then you won’t have to wonder if you are doing God’s will.  Then, the recipient of your efforts will be glad to welcome your version of God’s will.  If such a radical course of action means neglecting God’s theological, political, social, or moral will, fear not, there are ample numbers of people abjectly certain they are implementing God’s theological, political, social, and moral will.

You too will be certain, certain in that moment of caring, in your touch of compassion, in a flickering moment of fulfillment of a loving God’s will on earth, as in Heaven.

Embrace of Comfort

EMBRACE OF COMFORT

Comfort, comfort….from whom?....or from what?

Who and what awaits us,

that who and what that so resolutely hides itself from us now.

Comfort, comfort,

don't look for sense in it,

yet it is not deniable.

The very thought and awareness

testifies to its presence.

Comfort.

Comfort.

All is not lost,

and will never be lost.

Most dare not look for that Source of comfort

for the prospect of its nonexistence is too terrifying.

It is too abstract,

too irrelevant to this materialistic world,

and too unneeded in this age of screens, entertainment, and distraction.

Comfort is something in a bottle or a download.

But a day comes, inexorably approaching,

when yes, comfort,

irrational, inexplicable

comfort,

will unavoidably and desperately be needed.

Soon enough, soon enough,

making no sense,

from Source indistinct and incomprehensible,

comfort, comfort

will be needed,

    and will softly embrace.

Conflicted Choice

CONFLICTED CHOICE

Conflicts, between nations and people, inevitable.

Collapse of systems, inevitable.

Conflict internally, inevitable.

Conflict, what to do, the assessment of what is right.  Leaving one’s  children to earn money to feed those children.  Choosing among overlapping demands of friends, family, obligations, God, church, team, patriotism, pets, colleagues.

Conflict and choice…..there is the core nature of this worldly life.  Each moment at work, playing with children, helping a friend, supporting the team, is a moment not given to all the others.

Law and order, compassion, enforcement, acceptance…...each of them right, each justifiable.  Each choice of what to do bringing to light everything not done.

We defer the choice to holy texts, to imams and preachers, to team colors, to authority, blessed authority, anyone, anyone to save us from the torment of choice.

There will be suffering, and we don't want to make it worse, but the lovingly purchased pet food entailed suffering and death of natural resources or confined domesticated livestock.

Conflict and choices, enough choice by one group of people leading to conflict with that other group who made a different choice.

It is all good.  It will all induce suffering.

Some agonize over the choices.  Others don't.

"Just make them" time and mortality demand.  Decide who will suffer, who you will neglect, while trying to love and help the others.

Every opportunity is from God?.....but the "ruler of this world", satan or coyote or crow, confuses the issue.

Note and observe, record without judgement, then adjust as feels right.  That is a way to avoid taking control.  It is a way to make informed decisions.

This is a finite world.  It is so in order to promote values and awareness.  It is the big Choice that matters.

It is a world of mortality.  Only in the limitations of mortality do values and priorities arise.

God does indeed place before us opportunities, but we cannot take advantage of all of them.  The real opportunity is the Choice…..and there is no right answer for that Choice.  Manifold opportunities to rescue mean manifold necessities to neglect.  It is simply so in this world.  It is important,  critically important, to recognize that.

Give up control, but don't think that means escaping terrible choices.  The desire to escape moral choices leads to horrors of ISIS, Taliban, and Baptists.  Make informed decisions.  Be aware of what you are doing.  Accept, and this is critical, what you cannot do as determined by each choice of what to do.

Yes, each life opportunity, each opportunity to serve and help and heal and rescue is from God, personally delivered to you, demanding your response.  And you cannot do it all.  It is a huge act of faith and spiritual growth to recognize and accept that.

Mortality demands faith to accept what cannot be.  Eternity assures all good will be.

Meaningless Time

 Meaningless Time

Time.  Corporeal existence.  Somehow it is through those that interaction Reality arises.  Through those Deep Love arises.  And horrors arise.  And beauty arises.

Time.  Matter.  For now what we have to work with.

Yet nothing arising from them has meaning other than in the eternal.  Here and Now is the moment of Creation, we a painful part of that Creation.

The time and vanishing physical forms are illusions.  Yet through them we are empowered by God to create the eternal, eternal bonds and Love.

"Do not be discouraged", whispers Spirit.  Our capacity for control and power seems terribly limited.  Our wishes and will, even when uttered in the name of Jesus, seem pointless and hopeless.  Yet time deceives, making us think that the will of God is not unfolding.  Our entrapment in the Now blocks our view of unfolding Purpose and fulfillment of our hopes.  Our incarceration in the corporeal keeps us apart.  Yet in the usual Paradox, it is that corporeal and temporal nature that facilitate  creation of the real and enduring.

Faith, faith worn and tattered by the interminable delay of prophecy, faith is our source of warmth in the biting cold of the temporal world.  Faith is a capacity to sense and know beyond the body of Now.

The moment will pass, has already passed.  The physical forms are disappearing before our eyes.  All that passing makes room for fulfillment of our prayers.  All that is real and meaningful takes time.  That is the oft repeated lesson, the lesson of the widow and of the bridesmaids.  Time and the physical, in their fleeting passage, erect the eternal.  Hold fast to the vision of faith, to awareness of Truth.  So much better, a seemingly delayed answer that endures through eternity than an instant gratification that just as promptly disappears along with the rest of the world.  Be glad the answers to your prayers are not immediately evident in the world, for that would mean they would just as quickly disappear along with the world.

Let it unfold.  Do not be deceived by time.  The needs are known.  The prayers are heard.  Their fulfillment will not be through anything as unreliable as worldly outcomes.  Hold fast to faith as you watch time render the corporeal to dust, thereby making room for answers eternal.

Darned Love

Darned Love

Look at that emphasis in the Bible on Love, two thousand years ago!  Palestina was a rough place and time!  Love?!  Where did that come from?!  You would not think people would even know what that was!  Love!

Every discussion of the Bible should promptly return to that core message, because that is the radical message, the unique message.  Everything else is filler and marketing to make the unpalatable Love less obvious.  Throw in the usual us vs. them, some blood and battles, a bunch of rules and regulations, some guarantees of a judgment day when we (the good guys of course) will finally win and get our tickets to eternal paradise, and you've got the ingredients for yet one more religion suitable for wielding condemnation, retribution, and persecution.  But then there is that darned Love.  Unique, and usually uniquely ignored, in words two thousand years old abides this curious and irritating admonition to change our innermost being, our external actions, and the world.

Theologians will dissect verses and elaborate on eschatologies, while one single differentiating point, one overtly seditious word and its corollaries, distinguish the core message of this messenger from the jostling crowd of scriptures, teachings, and texts vying for our readily malleable belief.

Love.  Sacrificial, selfless Love.  One sermon.  One command.  One theology.  Leaving you one Choice.

Christmas Cards

Christmas Cards

Writing Christmas cards,

trite, shallow, pointless

Christmas cards,

growing more depressed with each.

'Tis the season,

the music,

Ol' Claus,

colored lights,

all contrived,

fake and facade,

no reality here,

wretchedly unrealistic…..

Yet images of Hope,

a wish,

relationships that will be, though not now.

The seemingly empty traditions

clarify and express our hopes,

granting vision of what could be.

The almost empty cards and carols

are desperately needed,

pulling us to something better.

…pulling us to be something better.

Son of Man

SON OF MAN

"Son of Man".  What a perfect self-appellation Yeshu (Jesus) chose!....especially coupled with references to us as "this generation".  Yes, fully human, unambiguously human, yet a descendent, more advanced, of a different spiritual generation.  It is a title accurate and informative, meaningful because it was not bestowed, but matter of factly claimed.

Son of Man…..knowing so much more than this generation could ever understand, homeless for lack of understanding by our generation, crucified by our rejection of the unheard lessons that might indict us.

Son of Man, reduced to struggling for parables to try to communicate a little of what we would not want to understand.

Son of Man, all ego stripped in that curious title, but at each mention dropping a hint as to His nature…..and ours.

Calling

 CALLING

You would think there would be some profound and wise instruction for how to follow your life's calling, whether you believe that calling comes from God, destiny, universe, or whatever.  There is a calling, or callings.  You can follow it.  But how it will be revealed is acutely individual.

Of course you have to want a calling before you can discern it.  You have to surrender to something before you can be called by it.  It is a rare and curious thing in an age of materialism for anyone to surrender to a calling.  It is also a rare and curious thing in an age of basic survival to surrender to a calling.  Yet all are called, but few accept it.   You will be alone.  Following a calling is terrifying, fraught with doubt, a glorious madness, indefensible and inexplicable.  Yet once accepting calling, you can never again deny it, at least not for long.  You would have it no other way, the world's tawdry profits rendered banal and tedious by a glimpse, even a fleeting glimpse, of Purpose and meaning and the invitation to be a part of it.

Almost Forgotten Words

Almost Forgotten Words

We all long for peace.  But with the slightest miscommunication wars erupt, within the household or between nations.

The great conflicts and the domestic disputes coalesce out of the swirling storm of disconnection and distance.  Each of these inner worlds, each ensemble of beliefs and expectations and desires, i.e. each individual human being, churns within the prison cell of its worldly experience.  Words form feeble and distorted connections among the individual cells, but the almost universal aversion to really listening renders the words impotent and their effects unpredictable.

So arguments ensue and wars erupt.

It is tragedy unnecessary and horror avoidable, but our trenchant resistance to learning ensures the tragedies and horrors will compound.

Ludicrous sound the admonitions to turn the other cheek and give away your coat as well as cloak.  Such progressive ideas were and are resoundingly ignored.  But imagine the world in the absence of those admonitions.  Indeed, look at parts of the world untouched by those impractical admonitions.

Against all odds those words and their source have and do make a difference.  They at least sufficiently prick our conscience that we give lip-service to the premise that war and divorce are not to be celebrated.

We may not turn the other cheek, but at least we ever so slightly uncomfortably squirm upon hearing the phrase.  Maybe our retributive blows are in turn ever so slightly tempered by some nagging sub-conscious awareness that some unrealistic itinerant progressive long ago pointed out a better way.

Do not listen.  Do not learn.  Continue as always, pragmatic and patriotic, resolute and righteous.  Try to deny that irritating tiny grain of sand in your well shined marching shoes,.... "turn the other cheek…..turn…...turn and repent."

Manipulation

 Manipulation

In recent decades as society has careened through ever faster and more radical changes, people have fled toward fundamentalism, demanding that there be one thing in their lives that does not change because they won't allow it to change, the one thing in their lives in their absolute control to prevent from changing, i.e. their beliefs.  Combine that with the introduction of powerful entertainment technology into church services.  Combine those with, ironically, a severing of bonds with and trust of traditional centralized church authority.  Combine that with a thermonuclear explosion of media technology best suited to manipulating malleable, unaware minds.  Put all those factors in an economic and political system structured so as to the greatest degree possible empower psychological-marketing as the primary influencer of belief and action.  Season this wicked cauldron with innate human nature of greed and lust for power.

Of course fundamentalist mega-churches sprung up like poisonous mushrooms, all  bright and enticing!  Of course a Rupert Murdoch would seize the opportunity for profit in peddling fear, hatred, and inevitable violence.  Of course a Trump would arise out of the fetid moral wastelands of the obscenely rich.

Too rapid change and progress do not open doors to enlightenment and renaissance.  They drive frightened minds back to the familiar comforts of witch-doctors and evangelists.  It is instead the traumatic collapse of convenient faith, the sacking of temples and the spread of plagues, that finally reveal the impotence of those wearing the robes and the hollowness of the idols.  Then the scales are removed from the eyes of a few, then a few precious scattered seeds can sprout, and renaissance and enlightenment and revival can momentarily again flourish.

A Secretive God

The obvious problem in trying to follow God's will for our lives is God's recalcitrance about unambiguously communicating that will.  Oh, we will promptly think we know what it is.  We will plan our lives accordingly.  Then when life unceremoniously tosses our holy plans into the dumpster we will stubbornly hold onto those plans because after all they are not our plans but God's plans.

Our will and God's will quickly become convoluted because God is so danged secretive about whatever plan there is.  Our "willing" morphs into "willful" without our noticing.

So for the umpteenth time it's back to the drawing board to resketch the priorities God seems to have given us, maybe, unless it's just our wishful thinking.

One is left to keep guessing, and adapt, and incorporate, and compromise.  Somewhere under all the practical considerations still resides that desire to do God's will, were it only clearly expressed.  Somewhere in the passing years, advancing age, and compounding shocks we of course may not "do" God's will, but we may live it.  Out of our control, unforeseen by our eyes, unanticipated in our plans, we somehow live God's will.  In that we can find some solace, some salve for our tattered faith.

Commit your life to God's path, and promptly get abjectly lost, gloriously lost, in the dense fog of unfolding healing and redemption.

Summary of Life

SUMMARY OF LIFE

Copyright 2021 Don Ray.  Feel free to print an share.

What would I tell anyone?  What would I tell myself?

Life is surreal.  It doesn't have surreal episodes as exceptions.  It is just surreal.

You will spend most of your life trying to belong and to survive.  You will pretty much do whatever society and situation demand to facilitate belonging and surviving.

Of necessity you will erect curtains of explanations to convince yourself you understand and to make sense of it all.  The curtains will be thick and will grow heavier with time in the effort to hide the fact they are woven out of imagination and wishful thinking.

The belonging and connections so desperately sought will exist at the most superficial and fragile level,  but great effort will be irredeemably invested in the effort to maintain these fragile facades so easily rendered to shreds by a trivial disagreement or misunderstanding.

Somewhere and somehow through all this, you, a kernel of conscious experience - information integration - and uninformed choices, will endure.  You will be shaped, and you will do some shaping.  The surreal nature of worldly life will prove to be a malleable matrix of circumstance that seems to chaotically and exasperatingly rage about you, but through it all is providing exactly the opportunities for Choice that will serve your growth…..or not…..that growth part is entirely up to you.

That's it.  That's the realistic graduation ceremony speech you will never hear.  At first it seems a dour and discouraging outlook.  You will find most realistic outlooks are dour and discouraging.

But look a little deeper…..at life, not the silly speech.  There is a freedom in all life’s seeming constraints, your ultimate freedom of Choice of response to those constraints.  There is growth, which is to say the essence and boundless potential of Life.  There is inescapable, if momentarily subsumed, awareness of the imperative of belonging and connection.  There is a capacity offered, which you can accept or reject, to see beauty.

All in all, the dour and discouraging outlook turns out to be the facade, the deception, the distortion.  This world can afford to be surreal because it is so fleeting.  You on the other hand endure, as does the potential for the belonging and connection that you consciously or unconsciously crave.  Make the inescapable choices along the way.  Shape your nature and being, then discover you are actually slowly revealing your nature and being, an essence eternal, an essence always belonging and that always belonged.

You will keep trying to belong and survive, as you must.  Along the way let yourself be born, born through the surreal storms, born into what you sought from the beginning.

This world is surreal.  Love is real.

Deer and coyotes

Deer stand on the trail above the gamboling coyote pups in the valley, a mother and yearling deer maybe.

The deer look down at the source of noise and motion and leave the trail to head for it!  They twist through the brush, negotiating openings and turning to go right into the middle of the bare spot where the coyotes play!

The pups scatter!

The deer head back up to the trail, the coyotes return to the opening.  The deer again focus their attention below the trail, again come down, the larger lead deer with its head down, moving with intent into the coyote area!  The coyotes again disappear but regroup in an adjacent opening in the brush.  The lead deer swings below the coyotes, then doubles back up the slope to where a few remain!

Finally, the pair of deer head back up the slope to the trail.

The coyote family has regrouped a little further south in a different red dirt opening.  The deer now look in that direction, and now return down the slope to the new gathering spot, taking yet another pass at their canine neighbors, again breaking up the group!

Is this play?...or curiosity?.....or preemptive defense?......or establishing dominance to make a first impression in hopes of warding off later threat from the grown coyotes?

The deer return to their course on which they were travelling before the detour.  Puppy play resumes.

Running and chasing and spinning and boxing and running and running and running, flashing into view across the red soil in the gaps between the junipers across the valley, groups chasing this way then turning the tables and becoming the chased, cutting tight racing curves around the bases of the trees, pawing at their quarry as they catch it, full speed for the entire hour, so alive, so youthful, tails extended out in health and joy.

Finally puppy play winds down, and beautiful  coyotes pose majestically in sun lit open patches of bare soil, lying beside each other,

Lying next to each other, rolling over, mouthing

Sitting so prettily, fur glowing white and red in morning sun.

.  It is a good morning, a very good morning.

Days later:

Coyote ridge, sunrise.

No little  coyote family.  I look and look to no avail.  I knew this day would come…...but what’s that sound?  From the mini-slot canyon, it just might be….I cannot imagine anything else making that sound.

How they blessed my life!  What a dream come true. What a gift of presence and the Spirit and companionship and connection.  Thank You!  Thank You!  Thank You!

Little coyotes gone?  It had to be someday.  I will worry about them.

Presence of Spirit, connection of essence of Spirit, deep sharing of Life, Nature and its children offer us that gift.  In Bodhi kitty's little chattering conversations as you walk by, in his insistent and remarkable communication that he has pottied, in his excited running into the kitchen to get a treat, there is essence of life, a connection needing no extrapolation or interpretation, the other’s need and desire and joy my need and desire and joy.

Coyote yelp!  No question!  Sounds like it is just beyond the south dam.  Looking for family?  Announcing capture of a treasure?

The universe of the conscious experience, an expanding universe, for time is nothing more than the expansion of  conscious experience, always growing, always incorporating, even if fragile physical synaptic structures give the illusion of “past” and “forgotten” as connections break and decay.

The universes of the conscious experience, interfacing and bumping up against each other, colliding and conflicting, and on exquisitely rare and beautiful occasions overlapping.

These expanding universes of consciousness and awareness,  reluctantly incorporating the intersections of mutually shared experiences, yet craving mutually shared experiences, always prompt to take the opportunity to inject their conscious experience into the experience of the other, always resistant to having the other’s conscious experience absorbed into their own.

But in rare moments, in the scruffing of a kitty’s ear as it rubs its head against your hand, in the wordless communication that captures the ineffable bond between pet and human, in watching coyote puppies play and joust and race,  the overlap of the universes of conscious experience is shared and mutually experienced, not in mere communication and interaction at the edges of those expanding universes, but in actual overlap of the experience, mutually shared essence of experience.  In such wordless  moments we finally know what it is to not be alone.

At the ranch

One of the two big black horses was nuzzling the little pigs this morning, on and on before he knew I was watching, licking and grooming, the two little pigs together.

So sweetly he treated the little pigs!....nuzzling and licking on and on as I kept my distance.  Instinct told me this was one of those glimpses into secrets of Nature, and once White-tummy horse noticed me the moment ended, little piggies going about their business.

All seems to fit this morning, in this sage moment, all seems to fit.  Each sound of bird and each imperceptible movement of damp air all fit into a Wholeness.  Mystery can wait, surely productivity can wait.  Some treasures are too precious to not lavishly spend.

“There will be time enough, there will be time enough” seems to whisper the Spirit as the hands race wildly around the watch dial.

------------------------

Hillside

So beautiful, this simple hillside.  So beautiful in peace and momentary safety.

The big yellow butterflies, the tall, tall green, the quiet, the blessed quiet.

Angels tread lightly in this tall grass, angels bringing their ministrations, bringing their manna for the soul.

Angels visit, invisible and inaudible, certainly not in white robes, though maybe in white jeans.

Angels visit and linger and even dwell, bringing tidings of presence and sustaining Spirit.

No wings these angels, for they have no need of wings.  Their message is a revealing of what soul already knows, written in runes and whispered in tongues.  Not to be taken too seriously, these incorporeal angels, easily mistaken for breeze or rustling grass.

So beautiful, so beautiful this hillside and its air, air that smells of life.  So precious, the feel of the texture of grass seed stalks

Time abates, languorously flowing hand in hand with warm breeze.  This is no place for brazen miracles or amped up prophets.  This is prophecy for the taking, lessons rich and plentiful embedded in the miracle of this lush moment.

Green and blue meet in sharp and ragged edge, these colors of Source.

Let a grass stalk brush your hand, listen well for what you may not hear but will understand without hearing.  Know without seeing, understand without hearing, fear not the mystery of Communion.

The only threat here is that you will miss the beauty, that you will hurry and miss how luxuriantly long a moment can be.

Let air full of life fill your nostrils while a blank awareness full of Spirit fills your soul.

Look intently at what most would call “nothing” and discern what the angels would tell you.

Ride the ripples of time that give birth to moments eternal, yes, moments eternal that beckon to awareness.

See the futility of denial;  there is far more here than you might have hoped.  Carry it with you, this eternal moment, this knowing the unknowable, this seeing the unseeable, this understanding of the inexplicable.

Carry it with you that you may come Home.

In time, in time, we will all learn as we are ready.  In time, in time, we will all share such moments.

For now, let the angels dance.  Let them tend your soul, your long-neglected soul.

Frantic

The robin parents frantically cheep and cheep, or should I say cry and cry?  I hear one for the longest time up near the top of the Aspen tree.  From the other end of the area I heard it.  Are they calling a warning to the lost babies?  Are they letting them know to stay put, wherever they are under the foliage?

From the tree!  A baby!  At the corner!  Dad stays with it.  Dad stays low with it, near the ground, making the same call as the mother:  “cheep…...cheep…….cheepcheepcheepcheepcheepcheep” the first two sharp and loud, then the last ones mumbled and trailing off.  They sound so frantic!  The baby makes little squeak sounds in response.  This baby is all the way to the fence. near the gate.  It flutters at the base of the fence.  Will it listen to dad?  Will it understand?  Louder squeaks!  Everyone is scared!  Dad is on the ground with it, then dad goes to a branch right above it.  The baby flutters to the base of the tree.  The little precious conversation of life and tenderness continues.  Dad flutters near the ground.  Mom makes her call still from up high.  The baby heads to the sunflowers.  It is too active!   It should stay still!  I want to put it in the nest!.....but I fear that would only multiply stress and compound problems.  The baby sits on a rock fully out in the open.  It needs days before it can fly!  It sounds so lost and forlorn and scared and perplexed and puzzled and worried!  It flutters toward me.  Surely it would never sit still in the nest again.

The little one hops under the overhang with me!  It hops onto my foot!  Such plaintive little chirps!  It stays some time on my foot.  Should I again try to put it in its homey cozy little nest?  Has its adventure satisfied it and is it ready to go home?  Would it stay this time?  What to do?!  What not to do?!  It hops off, looking for home, reaching the base of the stairs that lead to its home.  Oh, to rescue it!

It wanders around, its oversized feet hopping under the roof, its undersized wings unable to even fly over the drainpipe.  I hear rain drops.  I hear thunder.  The best place for it is surely under the overhang right where I sit.  It has gone around the corner.  Mom cries.  Dad cries.  The baby cries.  The fate of the other two baby robins remains unknown.  Hopefully one remains in the nest.

Is this what happened to us?  Did we leave the nest too soon?  In good time would we have been given access to the Tree of Knowledge?  Is that why we are so lost and confused, having simply stretched our wings too early, falling out of the Garden, not yet ready for our inheritance as children of God.  So God calls from on high, the  Christos comes down to our level, we all cry and seek shelter from the storms.

Robin dad still calls from the pine tree.

Fledging

This world is merely a launching point.  To understand the Purpose and Reality of the stew while just looking at the iron pot is impossible.  This world is the iron pot.  But the feast in preparation is not evident if you just study the iron.

This world is preparing the feast of Love, a purified Love of the highest form.  The pot of this physical world boils and mixes the conscious life in a chaotic mix of unpredictable roiling bubbles and steam.  It is madness, this world, mad and maddening chaos instituted by the sizzling pot.  But out of that cauldron of churning madness is distilled pure Love.

All the generosity and compassion we can muster will never fix the world.  But all that generosity and compassion  creates the pure Love that endures through eternity.  The world is never fixed, yet not one whit of selfless Love ever goes to waste.

We experience only the physical structure of the iron pot and the chaos induced at its simmering surface.  So we struggle as we should to end the wars and the bigotry and the homelessness.  In the process we change and heal lives.  But the world still has the wars and the homeless and the suffering and it always will.  It always will until this age passes, and it always will provide fertile ground for creating the senseless, irrational Love that is eternal.

And God looked upon it with the deepest of sorrows and said “it is good, it is very good”.

----------------------------------

Living in faith means of necessity living in contradiction to the world.  Prayer is not evidently productive; to listen to God and Spirit is to not listen to advice and demands of this world.

Living in faith means not prioritizing all the things that the world prioritizes.  Living in faith is crazy.  The faith commitment will for a while move forward in the illusion that faith and prayer will be consistent with the unfolding of worldly circumstances.  But sooner or later comes the painful realization that faith demands a path so divergent from the practicalities of career and social popularity and productivity and security and wealth accrual that faith is demanding something really crazy, and making that demand without guarantee of outcome.  Through the heart, through ineffable longing, through an inscrutable rightness, through irresistible temptation away from common sense and security, faith proffers its offers, and we linger a little too long, feel a little too right, immerse irretrievably too deeply in that baptism that makes no sense to anyone else, and if we dare admit it, makes no sense to us.

We may turn from it for a while, worldly logic and necessity may momentarily prevail, but we can never forget our affair with faith, that glimpse of something we do not yet recognize, that touch so foreign and familiar…...faith….mad, maddening, marvelous, motivating faith, senseless, pointless, and essential.
